Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) (commonly referred to as Microsoft) is an American multinational technology company headquartered inRedmond, Washington, that develops, manufactures, licenses, supports and sells computer software, consumer electronics and personal computers and services. Its best known software products are the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems, Microsoft Office office suite, and Internet Explorer and Edge web browsers. Its flagship hardware products are the Xbox game consoles and the Microsoft Surface tablet lineup. It is the world's largest software maker by revenue, and one of the world's most valuable companies.

Microsoft was founded by Paul Allen and Bill Gates on April 4, 1975, to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for Altair 8800. It rose to dominate the personal computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, followed by Microsoft Windows. The company's 1986 initial public offering, and subsequent rise in its share price, created three billionaires and an estimated 12,000 millionaires among Microsoft employees. Since the 1990s, it has increasingly diversified from the operating system market and has made a number of corporate acquisitions. In May 2011, Microsoft acquired Skype Technologies for $8.5 billion in its largest acquisition to date.

As of 2015, Microsoft is market dominant in both the IBM PC-compatible operating system (while it lost the majority of the overall operating system market toAndroid) and office software suite markets (the latter with Microsoft Office). The company also produces a wide range of other software for desktops and servers, and is active in areas including Internet search (with Bing), the video game industry (with the Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles), the digital services market (through MSN), and mobile phones (via the operating systems of Nokia's former phones and Windows Phone OS). In June 2012, Microsoft entered the personal computer production market for the first time, with the launch of the Microsoft Surface, a line of tablet computers.

With the acquisition of Nokia's devices and services division to form Microsoft Mobile Oy, the company re-entered the smartphone hardware market, after its previous attempt, Microsoft Kin, which resulted from their acquisition of Danger Inc.

Microsoft is a portmanteau of the words microcomputer and software.

Microsoft offers first major endorsement of new EU-U.S. data pact

Microsoft (MSFT) became on Monday the first major U.S. tech company to say it would transfer users' information to the United States using a new transatlantic commercial data pact and would resolve any disputes with European privacy watchdogs.

Data transfers to the United States have been conducted in a legal limbo since October last year when the European Union's top court struck down the Safe Harbour framework that allowed firms to easily move personal data across the Atlantic in compliance with strict EU data transferral rules.

EU data protection law bars companies from transferring personal data to countries deemed to have insufficient privacy safeguards, of which the United States is one, unless they set up complex legal structures or use a framework like Safe Harbour.

Microsoft said it would sign up to the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield, the new framework that was agreed by Brussels and Washington in February to fill the void left by Safe Harbour and ensure the $260 billion in digital services trade across the Atlantic continues smoothly.

Microsoft profit misses estimates, shares fall

(Reuters) - Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O) quarterly adjusted profit missed analysts' estimates as a continued slump in personal computer sales hurt the company's core Windows business, sending its shares down 4 percent in extended trading.

I'm liking this. Made money on them earlier this year and got out. Now, I'll get real interested again if they can fall under 50

True true... Considering the charges Google faces in Europe, they could use a little break in the US.

All in the point of view. Since I have a portion set aside for longer term, MSFT is looking really good. almost at 3% yield while waiting. I'm being patient for an entry at $50 or under combined with a sign it is establishing a support level.

All the New Xbox One Hardware Rumors Heading Into E3 2016
One of the big talking points at E3 2016 next week could be new hardware. Microsoft is rumored to have multiple announcements lined up to debut at the event. We've now collected all the rumors and reports here to give you a primer.

According to reports from May, one of the consoles Microsoft may announce at E3 will be a version of the Xbox One that is 40 percent smaller than the current model. This system is said to include a 2 TB hard drive (existing models have 500 GB and 1 TB hard drives) and may go on sale this year. It could also have a slightly redesigned controller.

There is no word on pricing yet, however. It should also be noted that if Microsoft does indeed announce an "Xbox Mini," it wouldn’t be much of a surprise, given that the Xbox 360 got a slimmed-down update; Sony has done the same with its consoles in the past.

Microsoft may also use its E3 2016 briefing to announce new streaming hardware in the form of devices akin to Google's Chromecast and Amazon's Fire Stick. It's not expected that these systems will run high-end games, but would instead be better suited for "lightweight games," much like the Apple TV. Pricing could be in the area of $100-$175.

Looking further out, Microsoft is also rumored to be working on a more powerful version of the Xbox One to launch in 2017. This system is said to be four times as beefy as the existing model and might be VR-ready. If the leaked PlayStation 4 Neo specs prove to be accurate, the new Xbox One would be even more powerful than that console, too. Whether or not this system is announced at E3, however, remains to be seen.

The era of 60 fps console gameplay incoming? I'm still not very keen on buying a PS4.5 since I've just recently bought my PS4 but I will get over it by the time it comes out :p

I've always been an Xbox guy and Halo guy. It's literally like the only game I've played since Halo 1 back in the day. I still play it 2-3 nights a week for quite a few hours on Xbox live with friends.

I used to be an XBOX guy as well back in the day when X360 was current-gen. But then when PS4 and its exclusives got announced, I knew I was gonna betray XBOX this time around.

Not surprised the stock (MSFT) is down. LNKD is a costly buy and not clear how it will help Microsoft.

Got a buy order in for MSFT for 49.25. We'll see if it will come back down to me today. With Microsoft having a very large segment of enterprise customers combined with their fondness for business to business cloud solutions, a business oriented social network makes sense. They will find a way to leverage this in their cloud offerings in the future. Expect to see integration with Microsoft Office as well as their CRM software. Also, keep in mind that MSFT gets 40 percent of their revenue from Office, 30 percent from Server software, 5 percent from Xbox and only 4% from their operating system. So, Xbox and Windows 10 is under ten percent of their business.
