How so? We already have a lot of different technologies based on it out there, and more important - a lot of hype to keep it all moving and developing. Lots of devices are already selling, especially those designed for games. I guess your estimates are quite pessimistic.
Computex highlighted VR's growing pains This is the year of virtual reality. In 2016, consumer versions of three major VR headsets -- the Oculus Rift, HTC's Vive and the PlayStation VR -- have or are about to hit store shelves, while smartphone-based models like the Gear VR are growing in popularity. But even as VR gains momentum, it's still an enigma for most people. This was never more apparent than in the halls of this year's Computex in Taipei. VR was front and center, but instead of traditional game demos, we saw examples of curious and niche applications that suggest the use case for VR is still evolving. I think people are just throwing out the upper end estimates for the VR market, but that potential will not be reached for a while. The big problem for 2016 being "the year of VR" is that it is largely reliant on video game applications. The video game industry is notorious for releasing products that are broken, then sending out the fix later. I mean sometimes the fixes are fast, but they have gotten away with releasing broken shit forever. The mass market (ie non-gamers, which also happens to be the people who do not have high end computer systems) will not be accepting of products that do not WORK immediately.
It's just simple videogames at this point, nothing really exciting. They can entertain you for a while but that's it. I think it's gonna take us years before something decent comes out. And it's not particularly affordable either. Microsoft's Hololens costs $3,000 for a unit. Does it sound like something your average gamer would buy?
Not that I think you're horribly wrong, but imo you underestimate the potential power of entertainment industry to push new and developing technologies such as this.
They want to use vr in medical science, military trainings or many other branches. In addition to AI and Deep learning, machine learning methods I think that vr will be very powerful. Definitely not only videogames. Best
You guys are all missing a big potential driver! Porn! Im being serious... Porn is what drove streaming media technologies such as online payments and blue-ray, which was competing against hdDVD until the porn industry chose blue-ray for its preferred format.
Talking to my daughter yesterday, not only her kids but all their friends are constantly using the Xbox, Playstation etc. Will the parents be able to buy the new consoles with built in VR.. With the reduced prices coming up the answer is yes.Look around and see what the young adults and kids are doing in their spare time. It almost blew me away but I seen my 15 month old grand daughter operating the controller on the Xbox 1. I would say this is bad moving forward for my grand kids but they are on the honor roll at school and active in sports Sony at E3 2016: PS4K, PlayStation VR, exclusive games, and what else to expect E3 2016 will likely be a victory lap for Sony. As of last month, the video game console maker had sold over 40 million PlayStation 4s. Analysts estimate the consoles outsells its competitor, Microsoft's Xbox One, by two-to-one. Sony has dominated with few big-name exclusives — that's about to change. The company will seek to further extend its lead this year with a more powerful console, a virtual reality headset, and a considerable number of first-party games. Sony's E3 2016 press conference is Monday, June 13th at 8:30PM EST. Here's what we expect to see. http://www.theverge.com/2016/6/7/11...6-press-conference-date-preview-ps4k-games-vr
