    Relative strength chart of GOOGL, monthly view;
relative to QQQ rather than SPY because.

Not a good look. Better off sticking with the QQQ index.

I keep comparing Google today to Microsoft in 2000 because they want to challenge the EU, rather than just play nicely. I saw someone on reddit the other day trying to argue that Microsoft won that case, but that's wrong just look at the MSFT/QQQ chart. Everyone ended up leaving Microsoft (Gates, Ballmer, etc.) and not until a brand new CEO entered the company did they get back to being Microsoft. That does not look like a win for the old guys to me.

A group of roughly 225 software engineers and other workers at Alphabet on Monday said they have formed a union, a move that could ripple through Silicon Valley.

The Alphabet Workers Union said it will be open to all employees and contractors, regardless of their role or classification. In addition, the Communications Workers of America [a telecom union] will provide support to the new Google union. Employees who join the Alphabet Workers Union will also be members of CWA Local 1400.

The new Google union was organized in secret for the better part of a year.

why would you organize when you work for a company that offers top tier benefits?

Unionization is part of a larger trend of employee activism. They did not necessarily need to form a union; but that is what they did.

The workers want Alphabet to be a company where workers have a meaningful say in decisions that affect them and the societies they live in.
Remember the government contracts that Alphabet was signing, which the workers didn't like? I believe the JEDI contract was one of them, and there was some work they had to do for the Chinese government. They also did not like the huge severance pay that an executive received after being "fired" for sexual harassment.
The Alphabet workers are concerned less with their own job security and more with how the code they develop gets used.

If I wanted to be politically active I'd find a better method than trying to persuade my employer to see things my way. And if my employer supported a communist regime I'd simply find another job. Sounds like these people are looking for a way to feel good about themselves and sit around and sing kumbaya.

Google fires research leader amid diversity, research freedom controversies

Alphabet Inc’s Google fired researcher Margaret Mitchell on Friday, they both said, after a weeks-long investigation found she moved electronic files outside the company amid a battle over research freedom and diversity.

Google said in a statement Mitchell violated the company’s code of conduct and security policies. Mitchell, who announced her firing on Twitter, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Google’s ethics in artificial intelligence research unit has been under scrutiny since December’s dismissal of Black scientist Timnit Gebru, which prompted thousands of Google workers to protest. She and Mitchell, who is white, had called for more diversity among Google’s research staff and expressed concern that the company was starting to censor research critical of its products.

Mitchell and Gebru co-led the ethics in artificial intelligence team for about two years.

Google has recruited top scientists with promises of research freedom, but the limits are tested as researchers increasingly write about the negative effects of technology and offer unflattering perspectives on their employer’s products.

    You lack ethics!
    No, you!
That's the thing about ethics, they can be so easily forgotten.

I had a realization about GOOGL. It may have difficulty outperforming the QQQ index just because it is so big; the smaller growth stocks in QQQ are liable to outperform GOOGL in this market.

Anyway, you still got to pick your spots imo for buying GOOGL. Largely it just goes along with QQQ, so why not just buy QQQ which also has a dividend?

But right now GOOGL is being stronger than even QQQ.

That would hurt Samsung a lot but I doubt it would have much impact on Google.

Why would Samsung prefer Bing over Google? What is the business case?
