With a friggin blindfold on! (Because if im hailing one, its a quite possibly a wild friday night anyway)
Yeah I bet I would, as long as it's convenient. I could see myself getting a driverless Uber to go to the airport at 4am.
Word is, it already is leaps and bounds safer than human. At least in its environment it has been released in to date. The problem is when turning anything over to machine that was once done by human, machine has to be exponentially safer. To what extent? None of it has been regulated yet. Interesting times....
Sorry Rasmussen. I refuse to Uber or whatever. I am a driver and am experienced to a bit over 170 on a super speedway. I need to hear the motor, command the stickshift, and feel the road with my butt. That said, I await delivery of my long reserved tri-motor performance-enhanced long-range autonomous-driving cybertruck someday.
he's from san francisco. normal up there doesn't have the same implications as elsewhere. last time i was up there i saw a stark naked man roller blading down the sidewalk and everybody was like ho hum, just another day.
As we already kn oi w, there are LOT of incinsiderate people in the USA. Not only that, there are a LOT if stupid people!!! Stupid or not why woukd anyone relinquish their safety (and LIFE!!!!) to some moron that has a death wish, when all the driver has to do is flip a switch on the dash and take 100% control of his car? What the heII is he trying to prove, that he's George Jetson?
I'm thinking of the movie, "I Robot", where the psychological background (guilt) of the Will Smith cop character was that a robot saved him from an auto-accident instead of a young girl by a strict probabilistically-based decision. I imagine that in the future all the cars will be linked to the same AI and when schmidt happens, e.g., large pipes roll off a truck, those kinds of decisions may have to be made. Which begs the question who is providing the programming, who is pulling the levers of AI? Other movies that come to mind: Minority Report and A.I.
I voted yes, not because I would just hop in one right now, but because by the time I can just walk out to my car, and it's been tested and approved by all of the regulatory tape that needs to be done, it will be safer than human drivers.
Technology is already available. Vehicles can already auto-drive as long as the lines in the road are all painted perfectly. Infrastructure doesn't support it yet though.
Infrastructure is the barrier. Vehicles communicating with roadway sensors, traffic grid management....... Future may mean no private vehicles...... Just electronic vehicles operated by public or private transportation companies. I would be okay with that. No crazy drivers. Just a car whenever you summon a ride, electronically controlled, and every vehicle can operate seamlessly at maximum safe speeds without fear of collision. Computer algorithm and sensors are more accurate than the human eye and brain reaction. We just need to eliminate the human factor.
