Hey happy to be here and hope to share in some friendly banter about what's going on in the Market. I'm a novice trader focused on growing this avenue of my retirement portfolio (stocks). I have a plan and I'm working the plan focused on long term growth in my positions (10+ years) as I'm much closer to retirement than I am Graduate school! -Dogtown
Welcome aboard. I have not been through your life situation but like you I'm getting older and not prepared for retirement either as I failed to save through my high earning IT years. I'm learning as I go. Read what people have suggested above. If you have a long term mentality about you then read the thread "longterm investor" as WXYZ has a lot of wisdom there. Take the time to set some realistic financial goals (i.e. 10% ave growth per year). My goal for my stock account and my self-directed ira account is to grow 12-13% a year. It's a realistic goal if I invest in S&P 500 index funds combined with some good growth and value stocks. I also suggest reading financial news on the wsj to gain an understanding of macro-economic trends. There is a lot of media driven hype regarding inflation fears and what not which you can likely ignore (read WXYZ for this). But understanding what products (i.e. semiconductors) and commodities are in short supply or are hot items right now can give you an idea of where to start looking for stocks to buy. When you mention "I like the stuff where you can buy a lot of shares" you raised a potential red flag for me. If you are intending penny stocks or really anything under a couple bucks, yes you can make money off of it but I think most here would agree that the risk is high and given your situation may not be an optimal path. There's plenty of people here who can educate you about day or swing trading using stocks that have better fundamentals than most penny stocks. Lastly please stay away from the Reddit driven hype regarding Gamestop, AMC, and other such short squeezed stocks. The risk to your principal is really high and if you are like me, you can't afford to take the gamble. Be careful and do plenty of research.
Do you want to be a short term trader or a long term investor? If the latter listen to the "longterm investor" thread. If a trader, lots of threads here to learn from
Hi, I'm new to the forum, actually new to forums in general. Been investing for over 35 years with what has to be mixed success with an over-abundance of learning opportunities. Still in work but hoping to catch the retirement train sometime soon after 31 years with the same oil supermajor. Having been bitten hard by the dot-com bubble and the 2008 financial crash, I have an overly conservative and sceptical investment approach. Just really concerned about volatility of some stocks.....but ferociously envious of those who had the guts to buy bitcoin and Tesla early on....Still learning I guess.. Will post some of my picks soon.
Welcome, FibbyNacci. Also, welcome to pierslyman who came immediately before. I wonder what would happen if we were to add FibbyNacci to pierslyman and then add FibbyNacci to that result...
