OK, so i'm just curious here but how many of you guys were genuinely surprised by this election outcome? and also the market action post-election?

personally, and i will be completely honest here but i was actually not all too shocked by the outcome as i was actually one of the few voters here in mecklenberg county in NC who voted for trump lol ... albeit i'll be honest here -- i did not actually think he would take NC! that was a pretty nice and amazing surprise! but i felt once NC was announced for trump i figured he was going to have a helluva shot at winning it all ... sure enough as it turned out he in fact did! :)

that being said - what about the market reaction after the election? sure the futures markets were reacting quite negatively initially but holy hell was that one of the craziest recoveries i have EVER seen in my life! not kidding here!

while i did not personally think the markets were going to meltdown by any stretch (even though you had these so-called pundits all over claiming the markets were going to crash on a trump win lol), i did however feel a correction might initiate after the election ... as it turns out we ended up doing an about face and closed up about 1% away from ATHs on the SPX, and we actually did close up at new highs for the DJ30 ... amazing!

i feel the market action post-election was most definitely the more surprising for me of all personally ... and not so much the election results since BREXIT was always on the back of my mind the past few weeks leading up to this election. so, i had a hunch that there was a chance trump could pull it off, albeit i didn't think he actually would in the end. it's pretty cool that he did though and knowing that my 1 vote actually contributed in some way in him winning NC was pretty sweet too haha.

how about you guys? were any of you surprised by either the election outcome and/or the market reaction post-election?

I was extremely surprised he won, and even more surprised at the reaction! I went to 100% cash before the election and missed out on some gains. That's OK though, I didn't want to make the same mistake I made on Brexit by staying in during high risk/low reward possibilities.

I was not surprised by the outcome. A couple of stock market sites were saying Trump would win the popular vote--which he didn't, but I was expecting a fight. And I do think there's something going on around the world with people fed up with "career politicians" or something. Besides, Trump was refusing to lose haha.

I'm maybe not surprised by the market action post-election, but I wasn't ready for it. One podcast I listen to said SPX 2080 was a buyable bottom, and looks like it wasn't just any bottom but perhaps the bottom. Now the JP Morgan quant (Kolanovic) is feeling bullish too. But I wasn't sure about that at the time, and I sure didn't think banks were going to the moon last week.

I thought it would be closer (electoral college-wise) than it was, but I was not surprised. The media and their polls are owned. This was about the common people who have been bent over the past couple decades; the people against the Uni-party; democrats and republicans. Bernie always had a better chance against Trump because he too is against the criminal corporate elites and the 1% who since 2015 own over half of the assets. People are tired of it; tired of globalism; tired of corporatism; tired of jobs going overseas while they are forced into applying for Social Security disability benefits. I live in a red state now but I used to live in Wisconsin which went red this time, so I know about how many companies moved their operations over seas and the number of people affected.

When liberal Michael Moore, producer of a great movie, his first, Roger and Me, came out with this speech, I knew Trump had a real chance.

I highly recommend "Roger and Me" from 1989 and the sequel "Pets or Meat?" It explains more than anything else the Trump victory and explains why Moore made that speech. Here's a trailer:

    The movie:

There's nothing wrong with the party that US voted in favor of, but it's more of who the Republicans chose to represent them.

All along, it's just simply Trump and his horrible image. A "celebrity" with brutal business records, narcissistic personality, endless lies, zero political experience and zero military experience that's made people angry.

If it was someone else that preached the same "bring jobs back to America", "stop illegal immigration", etc, I don't think there would be any this outrage we're seeing.

YLC, yes but also the Democrats chose wrong, ala status quo establishment and corporate money. I think Bernie, with a message similar to Trump's, would have had the better chance, especially in the states that mattered; PA, OH, MI, WI. The Republicans chose Trump because he's not a mainstream or radical Republican.

Over the past 30-some years I have voted for both parties but the best choice I was ever given was for independent and anti-corporatist Ralph Nader but he had no chance. Trump was able to get it done. I'm optimistic.

I agree that Hilary wasn't the best choice. They chose her due to her experience in politics and military experience with capturing Bin Laden; that was what they tried to sell all along.

There's nothing wrong with anti-corporatism. It's all just down to the very beginning of this - Trump. People are afraid of his temperament and his narcissistic personality. He's the chief in command of the the world's best and strongest military. Granted, there's a lot of steps prior to initiating military action, it's still terrifying.

I don't see his economic policies working either.

On a funnier note, hopefully his "wall" was really just a metaphor... If an actual physical structure is built, it should probably become one of the "modern day wonders of the world". :D

I wouldn't discount the "wall" pledge. With vibratory pile drivers driving US steel piles, and concrete pre-fabricated panels it could go up relatively quickly and would be a lot less complicated than our transcontinental railroads, the Alaska pipeline, or the Interstate Highway system, and it would employ many.

This was a hard one to swallow. Not because of Hillary. I voted for her as a "never Trump" vote. But, I am an American and will support my elected president and give him a chance. Still hard to believe though that a man with his type of rhetoric could pull this off. I hope he keeps in mind that the majority of people (popular vote) did not vote for him. He does not have a "mandate" and needs to lead for all American's. My predictions have not gone well in the political arena but I do think he will continue to be himself and much to the chagrin of Republican's don't look for him to fall in line with the establishment Republicans. He has an opportunity to really shake up Washington established politics. I hope he continues to do that fairly. Lastly, don't blame the FBI for the Democrats losing. While it did not help, she really lost because her party mis-read the tea leaves in the rust belt. Wisconsin, Michigan and Pa. is what did her in.

probably everyone remembers the market reaction to the resumption of the investigation in relation to Hillary! everyone thought it was a sign of affection and trust Clinton! But now evident that the market is just reacting to sudden news.

Just having a laugh today, seeing the reaction to Trump considering putting a Goldman Sachs executive on the National Economic Council...you know the reaction: "Trump is putting these guys in positions of power!"

Yes, he is taking poor executives from the downtrodden banking Industry, and giving them untold power in a civil position. Now! this guy will be able to take thousands of dollars from taxpayers.

Wow, are we in for a fun 4 years :D All one has to do to get the President of the US's attention is to have enough name recognition and a lot of social media followers and say something bad about Trump and you will get him to respond. One of the late night comics needs to come up with some type of Golden Tweet awards and hand them out to people who can piss of Trump enough to get him to Tweet about it.

Posted that today on a German Forum. Btw. If you like Trump you have to hide it here .

    I dont hide it ;)

    ps. Only one example:

I cook, heat, shower all with Natural Gas. Its really cheap here because we get it from Russia.
Now, with the sanctions against Russia we get closer to much more expensive Gas in the Future.

The Russians are not dumb, there is always a market for cheap Gas, so if you dont
want it some other will (China) even if it costs billions to make a new pipeline it will cash
    out over the years..

But atm no one realizes that and simply hate Russia for what ever ?!?
    and support the silly sanctions..

How to blow up a Party in Germany and let you being forced to leave.
Say you would Vote Trump, And if its not enough, say you like Putin..

    he he he..

    Greets,

    Z.
