Earnings smacking the stock down hard -17% to $146.50 SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Illumina, Inc. (ILMN) today announced estimated first quarter revenue of approximately $572 million, a 6% increase compared to $539 million in the first quarter of 2015 and 7% growth on a constant currency basis. This estimate, which is unaudited, is based on management's preliminary financial analysis.
Weekly chart: There might be a trendline support ~140. ILMN tagged 140 in after hours, see if it retreats back there tomorrow in regular hours and look for an entry if that holds. If 140 does not hold then 130 is the ultimate support (200-week average is there too). Personally I don't believe much in this company. They do good science. But their work is only for scientists, and government has cut support for that. If regular people used their product, then sales wouldn't stagnate so badly. How many people do you know who have been sequenced? Still though, people like something with lots of promises, and science is the new religion.

Since these guys usually pre-announce earnings when they're bad...since they haven't pre-announced anything yet, are we to presume that earnings are actually good?

Once again, these guys did NOT pre-report bad results -- they always pre-report results when they are bad -- so we can rest assured that the results are good. And Deutsche Bank comes out very positive just the day before ER, they didn't even wait one more day. Dan Leonard, Deutsche Bank's research analyst, upgraded Illumina, Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN) from Hold to Buy and increased its 12-month price target from $195 to $250. The analyst is optimistic due to positive newsflow in the clinical markets, which should cause higher enthusiasm about the total addressable market among investors. He applied 10.5 multiple to his 12 months ended September 2019 revenue estimate, to come up with the price target of $250. Investors have historically paid 10.5 times revenue when they had positive expectations about the total addressable market opportunity for next-generation sequencing. Leonard thinks positive expectations over the next 12 months are likely, and he believes the stock is going higher. The demand for NovaSeq could improve the results of the company going forward, said the analyst. He added that Illumina addressed all the issues for the fast NovaSeq adoption. If the NovaSeq revenue materializes in 2018 instead of in 2019, there would be a 300-bps improvement of the Wall Street's 2018 revenue growth forecast. Leonard believes the upward revision of guidance after the second-quarter earnings results is a bullish sign. He also sees improved sales trends for the company. Leonard believes investors are right to be concerned about market over capacity, but he thinks the demand for sequencing should grow as costs continue to fall.

So you're saying, in the future, we should short this 3-4 weeks before Earnings, then a few days before earnings, we can go long because we know they'll have good earnings? Sounds like a plan!
I would probably skip the shorting part, for this stock (depends how well it bounces back here). Wait for a week before ER, then rest easy.
