good morning @OldFart! here is today's market movers & news for those wanting to get a quick read before today's open- <-- click there to read! hope everyone has a great trading day ahead today!
this year, we have had some months that are a tale of 2 halves, june starting strong, i had an inkling that the 2nd half would be rough, but futures looking good after yesterday, if we close higher today, this market is just so resilient.
Looks like they were still dovish though, Euro drops hard while interest rates drop as well BOJ meeting later today, I guess they will be dovish as well
I kinda feel like if we get by this week without selling off on central banks meetings, then we could see a new ATH pretty soon in the summer. Volatility could drop in the coming weeks if we don’t get big news event due to summertime and the Word Cup. A lot of World Cup games are during our trading hours and those from Europe, South America, and Asia, etc might not be trading when their countries are playing or during the big games. Trade war could still take this market lower but right now the market doesn’t seem to worry about it at all
A couple days ago one of the Fast Money traders (Karen Finerman) said she was shorting NFLX. Today Citron makes a case for shorting it too. But last 2 days have been very very good for NFLX. I'm interested to see how this shakes out. Last weekend Netflix got into a little controversy with the "13 Reasons Why" Season 2 coming up, and I didn't think their response was a very good one, for a $150+ billion public company; basically said "you don't need to watch it". The old Deal With It defense, works with angtsy teenagers, but usually companies should show that they can work with public concerns while continuing to do business.
White House expects to slap tariffs on smaller list of Chinese products Friday https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/14/whi...-smaller-list-of-chinese-products-friday.html Market reaction mild, but I see stock like DE is close to LOD. China could retaliate and might hurt our farmers which isn’t good for DE
man that dollar gone ballistic today is this a delayed reaction to yesterday's surprise fed 4 hikes in '18 announcement? or ecb (euro) driven? or maybe both i guess not to get all forex on you guys, but i wonder if a stronger greenback could be some kind of headwind for the equity market down the road. that is quite the move today though! haven't seen a one-day move like this in a long one.
If the dollar continues to go higher then definitely is a concern. Guess it isn’t up enough to be a concern just yet right now Earnings should remain pretty strong for the near future even with a slight currency headwind
Droves of Wall Streeters abandon their work during big World Cup games — and 2 teams are far more distracting than the others http://www.businessinsider.com/world-cup-games-distract-traders-volumes-drop-2018-6?r=UK&IR=T After the 2010 World Cup, the European Central Bank looked into minute-by-minute data for fifteen global exchanges including Brazil, the US, and the host South Africa . The researchers found that when a team was playing, the number of trades in the home country fell by 45% while volumes were 55% lower. Also, whenever a team scored, trading activity dipped by another 5%. Some interesting stats. The US didn’t qualify for the World Cup this year though, so maybe volume won’t fall that much at Wall Street this year but probably will still be lower than usual
Would be a great-for-TV rematch if Germany vs Brazil again imo. Just as long as they keep it close this time heh.
Avalara IPO up 58% this morning. Based in my hometown. I dont jump on IPO bandwagons, but between DOCU, SMAR, and AVLR, there's some great IPO's from the northwest this Q
Wild swings instead If trade war becomes a concern again for the market all of the sudden, then wouldn’t be surprised to see small caps outperforming big caps in the near future
Wow what the hell is happening to gold Dropping hard today despite the dollar isn’t moving much today. It was also a little odd yesterday that gold was actually up when the dollar was up big though
Was watching soccer, but seems like big bounce off the lows for industrial stocks like MMM and BA Maybe the retaliation from China isn’t as big as feared
