I am big into AMD. I used to own NVDA too but I think I bailed out a bit early recently so, bummer. I recently got into AMD in 2018 when it was around $20, got out, with profit (not), got in at $40 and got out with profit (not), then got in again around $80. So since I didn't get back in below my prior exit point, I guess I didn't really gain anything here. In any case, my conviction for AMD only grew stronger recently when INTL reported their screwup. It seems AMD has INTL by the b*lls. So if it is just between AMD and INTL, it would have been an easy choice. I give AMD a couple more years to run before I reassess INTL's level of threat against AMD. Now I am not sure about NVDA. Are they 100% competitors, meaning they compete head to head in all the areas they sell? I know that they compete in the graphic CPU area (where NVDA made their name) and in the server chip area. I don't think AMD has to worry about NVDA in the PC/laptop space. I am glad AMD is expanding out by acquiring XILINX to broaden their portfolios. So the near future does look bright for AMD but NVDA could be another compelling investment.
Hi J. I have long been prone to owning businesses that are ripe for buyout. In 2016, post buyout, we had a rather large sum we wanted to put to work. It was still early for Lisa Su at AMD. She did appear to be doing good things but the trajectory was not yet clear. If that blob of money had come into my possession a year later, I might have gone with AMD based on my respect for Lisa Su. I ended up putting a substantial blob into a fairly new startup building electric cars in Fremont, California. When I mentioned that purchase on an Internet forum, there were quite a few people mocked it as a death wish, a few people were angry, and one person sent one of the most hostile PMs I've ever received. Since then I have bought and sold a couple of times per week and........ no, wait... I was thinking of someone else. I bought and held those shares, although I did triple that holding in the spring of 2019. I wonder how that company is doing....
