How can an investor best capitalize on the situation? One avenue that is turning good profits for me (25% so far) is investing in stock of companies that stand to benefit from sanctions against Russia. EQT is my hedge and I was looking at MOS which has skyrocketed since the invasion started.

Downturns in the market can provide opportunities so how do you plan to capitalize on the existing investing situation?

Agricultural inputs such as potash, urea, and phosphates are jumping big right now as are oil, gas, and several defense industry companies.

The big spikes in these are in the past but there might be 5-15% still to be had in these areas.

Had a great discussion with my wife and some church friends regarding the morality of profiting off a war, especially with investments in weapons companies. I decided to go the route of buying into MOS, OXY, NOC, and maybe GD for a couple of reasons:

    - I believe the Ukraine defense of their country is just and Russia's attack is unjust
    - It is morally just to defend those who are under attack and you need weapons to do it in this case
    - By analogy, I imagined living in 1935 and having perfect foreknowledge about what Hitler would be doing. Investing in a defense/weapons company then would be a just decision I think.
    - The amount of shares I buy are so small as to not move the price a whit one way or the other. My purchase will not alter management decisions one way or the other. I am simply along for the ride.

That's how I rationalize it anyway.

@gtrudeau88 here is how you look at scenarios like these that pop up every so many years. It's an opportunity to enrich yourself and family for the future, although you don't agree with they scenario that is presenting itself right now it is what it is. As you get older and more financially secure then you are in a better situation to by pass those types of opportunity. So for now play them or go play.

So my change into NOC, GD, OXY, and MOS produced benefit yesterday in that while I lost a few hundred $ in OXY and maybe $30 in a couple others, I did miss the huge drop in the S&P generally. I only lost .45% on the day.

Looking forward to seeing how this day turns out. OXY, EQT, and NOC are up in pre-session trading. NOC and MOS are down. Even if I gain only a couple % in the next week say, I think I'm at least protected from further severe drops in the S&P, at least while the fighting is still occurring.

Both sides are wrong, politicians are acting selfish because they want power and the civilians wil suffer for that.

Sorry to read this, Marvan. Do you expect the reduced value to be temporary? Is this a buy opportunity?

    Hey Tom,I do not know if it is temporary, this is Blackrock's info;

Effective March 2, 2022, the Fund has temporarily suspended new creations and redemptions of its shares until further notice. Please refer to the RNS announcement for further detail.

Effective March 4, 2022, secondary market trading in the shares of the Fund has been suspended by Euronext.
Effective March 7, 2022, secondary market trading in the shares of the Fund has been suspended by Deutsche Börse and LSE.
Effective March 8, 2022, secondary market trading in the shares of the Fund has been suspended on SIX Swiss Exchange.

Please note, NAV values depicted below reflect the last official NAV of the fund prior to the temporary valuation suspension.
The fund manager has taken the decision to waive the total expense ratio (TER) payable by the fund from March 2, 2022, until further notice.

There are also shares from Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic in the etf, these are still there. I would not buy more shares as long as these warr is not finished.

Sorry for clicking "like". It was just intended to be an acknowledgement.

Obviously, I do not like that your equity is now frozen. I feel badly for you and hope this works out OK for you on the long term.

Hey Tom, no need to feel sorry for that because it is only a very small percentage of my portfolio.

When politicians meddle into the stockmarkets it turns always out in loss of value for the stockholders.

And in my country it is even worse, most politicians think dat the stockmarket is a gambling place.
