Toyota(TM) reported quarterly earnings that showed the automaker was selling more vehicles but making less money, in part due to the strengthening Japanese currency.
I've watched big auto do things that are so stupid it hurts my head. It's like they are trying to fail. Toyota has been one of the dumbest. Until now... Toyota has bought into the INN one stroke engine. No, it's not one stroke. That's just a name. https://innengine.com/ IMO, even the INN engine does not make sense compared to electrification for most cars but particularly for small cars. For larger vehicles, however, this technology makes a lot of sense. Particularly for vans and trucks, this opposed piston engine has the potential to be industry altering. If they can bring it to market in less than 5 years, it will push back electrification of trucks and vans. If they can't, it will be another colossal waste of money. This is the first time I have believed Toyota has a chance of surviving much into the 2030s.
Based on flagrant speculation and ignorance, I will opine the INN will be a lighter, simpler, engine at the same power level over the Achates Power design. Again, this is based on simulated knowledge. The key to the bake off will be the reliability of the swash bearing system of the INN engine. If it proves to be good, the INN design uses a lot less material and space to accomplish roughly the same thing. Meanwhile with the competition, the ACE (advanced combat engine) (designed by Achates Power, built by Caterpillar) was shown at an Australian military tech expo two months ago. This engine develops 1000hp with a torque peak of 2424ft*lbs.
