PHPBB always allowed clicking to get the latest post. Example, on this page, there are no links to access the latest, most recent post, for the stock market today april 4-8th forum thread: http://www.stockaholics.net/forums/stock-market-today.2/ I can click on the latest poster's info, or whatnot, but I click and have to scroll to the bottom of the page all the time. The old forum I could just click to go directly to the latest most recent post.
While it may not be what you are looking for exactly, have you tried playing around with the Flag in the upper right corner? It drops down a list and will take you directly to that particular message if you click on the title of the post for whatever entry is listed.
