AUSTIN, Texas, April 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Luminex Corporation (LMNX) today announced that its SYNCT™ Software has received both U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance and CE Marking for use with its ARIES® System and NxTAG® assays on the MAGPIX® System. SYNCT Software is middleware that provides access to data and reports through a single interface, and allows for customizable workflows by connecting ARIES® and NxTAG-enabled MAGPIX workstations in the lab.

Specifically designed for molecular laboratories running ARIES® and NxTAG assays, SYNCT empowers laboratory directors by offering a streamlined workflow, enhanced data management, and the ability to easily add new functionality. From anywhere in the lab, users can create and prepare orders or manage results from all next-generation Luminex instruments, allowing for division of labor and flexibility to work within any lab process connected to SYNCT. Centralized reporting allows for higher-quality results because data can be accumulated in one place and overseen by the laboratory director. Labs with multiple locations can use SYNCT Software to route all results to a single reviewer, anywhere on the lab network, before sending to the lab information system.

Quarter in Details

System sales jumped 12.4% on a year-over-year basis to $9.6 million. Notably, the company shipped 72 multiplexing analyzers in the reported quarter that led to higher system revenues. Here we note that system sales included the placement of the ARIES MAGPIX systems, LX systems, FLEXMAP 3D systems and Verigene System platforms as well.

Assay revenues grew 36.5% year over year. Sales of the infectious disease assay were approximately 78% of total assay sales in the quarter while genetic testing assays contributed 22%.

Coming to royalty revenues, sales at this segment increased roughly 7% on a year-over-year basis to approximately $10.2 million.

Consumables sales rose 5.1% to $11.1 million, primarily attributable to strong demand across the partner base of the company.

Margins

Adjusted gross margin was 61.2% in the reported quarter, compared to 71.8% a year ago. Per management, the contraction in gross margin can be majorly attributed to the acquisition of Nanosphere.

Coming to operating expenses along with the Nanosphere deal and related costs, expenses soared a massive 32% on a year-over-year basis. However, excluding Nanosphere, operating expenses climbed 7% from the year-ago quarter.

Guidance

Luminex reiterated its 2017 annual revenue guidance at the band of $295 million to $305 million.

The company projects first-quarter 2017 revenues in the range of $73 million to $75 million.

Moreover, the introduction of the ARIES model is applicable to a variety of key diseases, including HSV (Herpes), Influenza, and Group B Strep (GBS). GBS alone affects 1 in 4 pregnant women, while 5% to 20% of the U.S. population will be infected with flu every year [60 million individuals]. As a result, Luminex plans ARIES to cover up to 6,500 new hospitable [sic] labs, representing a 13-fold increase over their current available U.S. customer base [2015].

Bloodstream Infectious Diseases: The acquisition of Nanosphere on June 30, 2016 enveloped Nanosphere's own proprietary diagnostics, which enable rapid and accurate detection of respiratory, gastrointestinal and bloodstream infections. Nanosphere pioneered growth in the bloodstream infection testing segment after receiving FDA approval for Verigene Gram-Positive Blood Culture test panels. While traditional detection of pathogens associated with bloodstream infections could take several days, Verigene identifies resistance markers within 2.5 hours after positive blood culture.

FDA Approval for Bordetella: Bordetella cause respiratory disease through pathogenesis, leading to whooping cough. The FDA approval for ARIES testing of Bordetella is due within the first few months of 2017.
