Sony Profit Leaps as PlayStation4 Eclipses Phone Decline http://www.thestreet.com/story/1354...ses-phone-decline.html?puc=yahoo&cm_ven=YAHOO Sony just posted a 666% rise in profit as its turnaround plan takes hold Japanese electronics giant Sony posted a 666.5 percent rise in pretax profit for its full fiscal year on Thursday, helped by cost cutting in its smartphone business and the continued popularity of the PlayStation 4. Income before taxes for the year ending March 31 came in at 304.5 billion yen ($2.81 billion), a big rise from the 39.7 billion yen recorded during the same period last year. Operating profit rose 329.2 percent to 294.2 billion yen, its largest figure since fiscal 2007, according to Reuters. Losses in Sony's mobile communications business, which has been a cause for concern, narrowed to 61.4 billion yen from 217.6 billion in fiscal 2015. The Japanese firm has been on a drive to increase profitability with its Xperia smartphone range rather than chase market share, a move that appears to be paying off. "If it means that we're selling less number of phones going out the door. We're fine with that so long as we have a profitable business, and we're really on our way to being profitable in that regard," Kazuo Hira, the chief executive of Sony, told CNBC in February. http://www.cnbc.com/2016/04/28/sony...adline|headline|story&par=yahoo&doc=103587247
I can't recall seeing so many gaps on a chart in a long time as this one for SNE. It is overbought but could head higher from accumulation. With VR, Playstation 4.5 is already on the hit parade. Come mid-October, Sony may be poised to take the lead in the small but fast-growing market for consumer virtual-reality headsets. https://www.technologyreview.com/s/601702/why-oculus-and-htc-need-to-watch-out-for-sony-in-vr/
Sony Banking on Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence to Juice Its Revenues For years, this company was an exciting pioneer. Sony's 1957 TR-63 Radio was the device credited with launching the entirely new industry of consumer micro-electronics. The 1970s and '80s saw the advent of Walkman products. Then came the Trinitron TV. However, that kind of game-changing success has lately eluded Sony. To be sure, Sony stock has risen 19% this year. It closed Thursday trading at $29.34 a share, exactly as it had started. The company's sensor business has slowed, partly due to tapering demand for smartphones. In recent years, the company's has relied heavily on PlayStation console sales. https://www.thestreet.com/story/136...uice-its-revenues.html?puc=yahoo&cm_ven=YAHOO

The firm has a price target of 4000 yen, or $39.61, on the shares. Sony speaks up on why the PlayStation VR was pushed back to October Sony has said that they delayed the PlayStation VR release to October because they wanted to make sure that the software for the device is ready along with a solid lineup of VR games. The PlayStation VR will be taking on the other VR headset giants HTC Vive from Valve and Facebook's Oculus Rift. It will be set for a different market as it will only be available for the PlayStation 4 and the upcoming PlayStation Neo. http://en.yibada.com/articles/13993...up-why-playstation-vr-pushed-back-october.htm
Box Office: 'Ghostbusters' Tops Friday With $17.2 Million Sony ’s much-discussed Ghostbusters reboot roared into theaters last night with a decent $17.2 million opening day. If this were a normal Paul Feig/Melissa McCarthy comedy, that would be a fantastic opening day. But this isn’t a $25m comedy romp or even a $60m action comedy. It’s a hardcore franchise reboot that eventually came in at $144m. If the conventional wisdom states that female-led films don’t travel overseas (not always true) and that comedies don’t travel overseas (more often true, relatively speaking), then this franchise-reboot needs to be the best of all worlds. It needs to be every bit as leggy as the conventional female-led genre entry while also playing like a muscular franchise offering overseas. http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottme...mpaign=yahootix&partner=yahootix#6e3f9ad2799e

PlayStation VR will come with an eight-game demo disc When PlayStation VR buyers plug in their headsets next month, Sony wants them to get their footing with a real, physical demo disc. As explained in a blog post earlier today, PlayStation VR will ship with a free sample of eight games: Driveclub VR PlayStation VR Worlds RIGS Mechanized Combat League Tumble VR Battlezone EVE: Valkyrie Wayward Sky Headmaster This list includes some of the titles that could drive PlayStation VR adoption. Driveclub VR is part of the PlayStation 4’s flagship racing franchise, while PlayStation VR Worlds is itself essentially a five-minigame showcase of what the platform can do. Sony hopes RIGS will become a VR e-sport, and EVE: Valkyrie was one of the Oculus Rift’s biggest launch games. As a number of people have pointed out, a demo disc is a nostalgic throwback to the ‘90s and early ‘00s, when internet speeds were slow and trying a game before you bought it was standard practice. It’s not clear whether you’ll be able to download these demos without the disc, and it’s possible to interpret this as a sign that Sony thinks its network won’t be up to supporting a bunch of VR game downloads on launch day. This may well be true, especially since we don’t know precisely how large these games will be. But there are at least two good reasons to put them on a disc. The first is that VR evokes a longing for the ‘90s in many people, and read-only physical media storage is starting to become almost exotic in itself. Unwrapping a disc is just more fun than navigating the PlayStation Store to find a demo. The second is that Sony basically has one job on October 13th, and that job is to make using PlayStation VR as painless and foolproof as humanly possible. A disc can get people into the headset right away, with minimal wait time and ambiguity about what they should be downloading or playing. Granted, many people will already be getting a disc with their order: the $499 "launch bundle" — which anyone who doesn’t already own a PlayStation Camera or Move controllers will probably want — includes a full version ofPlayStation VR Worlds as well as the demo. We’ll probably learn more about PlayStation VR’s launch lineup at Sony’s event tomorrow, where it’s expected to unveil two new PlayStation 4 consoles. http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/6/12823126/sony-playstation-vr-demo-disc-driveclub-rigs
Shares of Sony ($SNE) are likely to see early strength after the consumer electronics giant raised its full-year profit forecast on lower costs.
I'm so glad I got into SNE when it was only at $21. I felt like the company overall turned the corner, and so far that seems to be true.
It seems like SNE investors are jittery at the grave reviews of the Dark Tower, but the film only cost $60 mil, and they already made $27.
