Stockaholics Weekly T/A Charting Challenge Rules & Guidelines:

1.) Participants will take turns each week to post up a chart.

2.) Participants (including the chart picker) will need to then vote on the direction of the chart for the week (starting points from Friday's close), and will have up until 9:30am eastern time on the first trading day of the week. There will be a new poll up for each new week. Members who correctly predict the direction (Up or Down) of the chart by week's end will receive 10 points in the members leaderboard for that week.

3.) Members who also provide some rationale for their direction vote (this can be brief) will be awarded another 2 points in the members leaderboard.

4.) Members who simply "participate" in the challenge will receive 1 point for the week.

Remember...the chart direction poll closes at the opening bell on the first trading day of the new week! So try to get those votes in ASAP!

So, w/o getting into further ado have at it with the T/A on this week's charting challenge!

(Chart to be posted in here sometime after the market closes on Friday.)

I'm voting down on ALK for this upcoming week.

I'll try to edit this post with some rationale later this weekend if I'm feeling better...been battling the flu bug all week long. Ugh...

    Going with DOWN
I am a bit concerned about it being so over extended. It could certainly bounce this week, but it has a tendency to sell off multiple weeks at a time on the weekly.

In the longer time frame ALK is in that portion (phase B) of a trading range (TR) where price is erratic and difficult to predict next moves. In the shorter time frames it is in a downtrend but showing shortening of the downward thrust so the recent trend could be ending and it could see a bounce this coming week. But when, where, and how it will bounce is difficult to predict given that it is in phase B of the longer term TR. So, I'll just have to go with the recent trend and say DOWN.

I agree with everything posted so far. Technically, everything looks down for the week. It's just I have a hunch that it's going up, but I cannot put my finger on it. I posted ALK hoping someone would make the bull case so I could scratch that itch. The best I can come up with technically is that for lo the past 11 months the current level has been a key (mostly resistance) level. I just feel like it's gonna turn into support. Plus, have you ever seen a 200 DMA flatten out so much on such an up-n-down stock??? So gonna stick with my gut on this one:

    UP

I'll vote down. Thinking the same thing as OnePoint272 (i.e. difficult to say what price will do exactly this week). Although my analysis is not the same as his...slowly working on it.
The thing to me is, it's on the bottom Bollinger Band so once it gets off of it you can get a bounce. No idea when it will get off of it.

    ALK itself:

    ALK's relative strength, to SPY:
This down more is more signficant, looking at the relative strength. But if it doesn't keep pushing down then you'll end up with a higher low.in the relative strength, and then you'll want to see some upward-biased action.

Looking at the weekly relative strength though this could get really going downward.
I mean, there's a rough head-and-shoulders pattern in ALK. One of the airlines warned that the consequences of the government shutdown was tougher on airlines than that one anticipated.

Up, fair price that should hold, at least short- and mid-term.
