States Should Start Planning Now For FDA Approval Of Psychedelics, Federal Report Says

    https://www.marijuanamoment.net/sta...approval-of-psychedelics-federal-report-says/

    Report is here: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2026-07-14/pdf/2026-14158.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Policymakers normally do not spend this much effort on state implementation, workforce preparation, rural clinics, VA deployment, reimbursement infrastructure, and rescheduling mechanics for something they think has no realistic chance of reaching patients.

Current Research, Regulatory, and Policy Considerations Regarding Psychedelics as Medicine (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

    https://library.samhsa.gov/sites/de...ons-psychedelics-as-medicine-pep26-01-004.pdf

This is a 2026 SAMHSA/HHS technical-assistance paper telling state and territorial mental-health leaders to start planning now for the fiscal, legal, workforce, Medicaid, and operational consequences of FDA-approved psychedelic medicines. It explicitly says states should develop oversight frameworks before these therapies become available.

HHS Announces Key Leadership Selections at FDA to Promote Innovation, Reform, and National Health Priorities

    https://www.hhs.gov/press-room/hhs-announces-key-fda-leadership-selections.html

WASHINGTON, D.C. — September 8, 2026 — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services today announced the selection of four senior leaders at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), strengthening the agency’s leadership team as FDA advances its public health pillars to deliver profound benefits for patients, consumers, and public health. These appointments reflect a deliberate strategy to drive innovation and meaningful reform across FDA, positioning the Agency to lead on its core priorities: advancing innovation and global leadership, strengthening national health security, increasing access to affordable medicines and medical products, and promoting health wellness for the American people.Jared Seehafer, M.S. has been selected to serve as FDA’s first Deputy Commissioner for Technology and Artificial Intelligence;Michael Davis, M.D., Ph.D., has been selected as Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER);Karim Mikhail, B.Pharm, MSc, has been selected as Director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER); andBret Koplow, Ph.D., J.D., has been selected as Director of the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP).

    ---

I think the Michael Davis appointment at FDA is worth paying attention to, especially for anyone following Definium and DT120.

HHS announced Davis as the new Director of CDER, which is the part of FDA responsible for reviewing and approving drugs. What makes this particularly interesting is his background. Davis previously worked in FDA’s psychiatry division and then spent several years as Chief Medical Officer at Usona Institute, one of the better-known organizations involved in developing psychedelic medicines, including psilocybin for depression.

So this isn’t someone who is just vaguely familiar with psychedelics. He understands the clinical-development issues around these drugs from both sides of the regulatory table. FDA review as well as actual psychedelic drug development.

Having someone running CDER who already deeply understands psychedelics, psychiatric trial design, functional unblinding, safety monitoring and the regulatory challenges of this drug class removes a lot of the "unknown" around that question.

    And the timing is interesting.

DT120 now has Breakthrough Therapy Designation in BOTH GAD and MDD, with positive Phase 3 results already reported in each indication through Voyage and Emerge, while Panorama and Ascend continue building out the registration package.
