Good Friday morning Stockaholics! Here is this morning's pre-market news thread for those of you wanting to get a quick read before today's open- <-- click there to read! Hope everyone has a great final trading day of the week ahead today!
Morning Lineup -- 12/15/23 -- V Bottoms Fri, Dec 15, 2023 US equity futures are once again set for a higher open this morning, with small-caps leading the way. Speaking of small-caps, the Russell 2,000 didn't make a new all-time high yesterday like the Dow or the S&P 500 Total Return index, but it did make a new 52-week high. In case you missed this stat in last night's Closer, it took just 48 days for the Russell 2,000 to go from a 52-week low to a 52-week high. Remarkably, that was the shortest turnaround time ever for the Russell to go from 52-week low to 52-week high!
hope everyone had a great week! hard to believe we're now down to just 2 weeks left on the year. have a great weekend y'all!
here's a final market check as we head into the lunch hour on the east and as we close out yet another good week overall for the market. edited: updated to 4pm close
hey, just a quick Q for the regulars in here... would anyone like to see these threads broken up into weekly threads like we had going previously? or is everyone mostly happy with this long running continuous thread? i'm trying my hand at the weekly thread again here: https://stockaholics.net/threads/stock-market-today-december-18th-22nd-2023.13071/ the nice thing about setting it up that way is that i can post a few things before the week even begins, to kind of give a little preview or overview of the week ahead. additionally, i have been contemplating possibly bringing back the weekly market direction poll games to the community here for the new year...maybe even a weekly stock pickers contest too. though, not sure if i would be able to run them on a daily format as that might get a little overwhelming for me. but, i'd be curious to hear what the community thinks. is anyone alright with this thread going back on a weekly format? or keep things as is. i'm alright with either or tbh. but, thought it be kinda nice to set them up on a week-to-week basis again. and i think it would be cool to run the weekly market direction games here again at the very least. i think that could get some nice participation from the community. thoughts?
awesome! sorry to go all O/T in here lol. i'm debating if a separate thread should be used for the weekly market direction games next year or if we do go back to doing these market discussions threads on a weekly basis again, if i should just use the same thread to make the poll and just make it like an all-in-one weekly discussion thread. i do like the idea of having the poll on the actual discussion thread itself too. guess we can play it by ear.
I think having a poll for the weekly direction in the weekly discussion thread is a pretty good idea.
This recent small-cap leadership is really concerning me. Also, although I'm glad to see @bigbear0083 back because he really knows his stuff, I am concerned that he is back after taking 2023 (stocks +40% in a year) off. I can flip my trading account between long and short biases, but my retirement account is going to need attention.
Sold CGEN for some profits, have been a bag holder of this stock but I guess I get lucky on the spike today, thanks GILD
Well interesting. I am thinking we might see mega tech names underperforming early on next year, let's see what the indices will do if the mega tech names have a sizable pullback.
cash spx now just about 30 handles off from the ATH closing print ... seems like a new high is inevitable absent something horribly shocking out of left field
I think so lol, just slowly grind higher for rest of the year probably would be enough to get us to the new ATH, hard to see major selling rest of the year unless the FED comes out to say something like we are gonna hike 2 to 3 more times next year
i forgot where i read this, but think i remember reading something about the market making ATHs in every year since 2013? maybe that was for the dow which it did last week. but, think the same for the SPX as well. so we'll see if it can join the dow in ATH territory before this year is out. pretty remarkable run this has been off the oct. lows from last year. honestly didn't think ATHs were in the cards this soon.
ah here we go. this was the chart i found off of twitter. this one is for the dow, but should look a little similar for spx i think. let's see if santa can deliver the new high print for the spx
Let's see if we can keep this streak going, maybe we hit a new ATH end of this year and also beginning of next year too, then we will see whether we can avoid a recession next year
