Swan Song Bodes Well for Intel (INTC) But for How Long?
    Wed, Jan 13, 2021

After two years at the helm, news broke this morning that Bob Swan will be stepping down from his position of CEO of Intel (INTC). He will be replaced by VMware (VMW) CEO Pat Gelsinger on February 15th. While INTC has been a significant underperformer over the past year—it is the only semiconductor stock in the S&P 500 that is lower than it was one year ago—the immediate response from the market to today's news has been overwhelmingly positive. As of this writing, the stock is up 8.55% which would be its best day since March of last year around the time of the bear market lows.

Though there is plenty of time left in the day for those gains to be built upon or eaten into, the opening gap was substantial. Opening at $59.50, the gap up of 11.76% was one of the largest for INTC on record. The only times since 2000 that there were larger gaps to the upside were in April of 2001 when the stock gapped up 12.64% on the 11th and 12.21% on the 18th. Going back before 2000, the only upside gap that was even larger was a 29.92% move in October of 1987, not long after Black Monday and when Intel's stock was trading under $1 on a split-adjusted basis.

Today's gap up on the news of a CEO change was also even larger than any move on earnings of the past nearly two decades. As shown in the snapshot from our Earnings Explorer below, the best gap up on earnings news that INTC has experienced since late 2001 was a 7.27% gap following the Q1 results of 2008.

As previously mentioned, there is not much historical precedent for INTC from gaps up as large as today, but of the past four times that INTC gapped up at least 10%, performance in the weeks and months after have generally been pretty negative. The next week has usually seen some further moves higher with the only decline being the second gap up over 10% in April 2001. As for returns throughout the next year, the stock has consistently declined.

I would agree, it's about 100%. Unless you're talking about a specific date.

Intel has partnered with IBM on process node technology. 20 years ago, the thought would have been laughable. None the less...

IBM has announced they have a 2nm process node working in the lab.

We don't know what "2nm" means. It certainly isn't the feature size; we stopped using feature size numbers to indicate feature size, long ago. lol!

Still, IBM seems to be claiming about 12% increased density versus TSMC's 3nm node.

Nerds may be interested to know, images of the process released by IBM show they are using nanosheet technology.

If this is true, and if Intel licenses this technology, it could bode extremely well for Intel. 2um will be bread and butter in five years. Intel has time to get their feet underneath them for the next wave of silicone.

hmm, that is probably not what we think, but I guess they are just trying to keep things simple to understand.

INTEL: The once-popular kid who’s left behind now

I’ve been an Intel user since forever.
After seeing all the NVDA/AMD news for the past few weeks, I even considered upgrading my Intel CPU to an AMD CPU. This makes me wonder, what happened to the great Intel? Are they stoned?
    ---Promise or Non-sense?---
    -
INTC is beaten badly on the market.
The most demand for semiconductors is from business instead of gamers/ individuals. Intel has been losing their customers as they lost competition.
On the other hand, AMD gradually over the quarters, showing innovation with a cutting-edge chip and in other sectors.
    -
Buy Intel’s dip instead of AMD or NVDA?
It’s a big no for me.
Don’t get me wrong, Intel is far from dead or less competitive. Balance sheet is great and the new CEO looks pretty promising.
However, the big question - Will INTC go back to their glory days?
Not gonna happen if they don’t show any innovation. I’m laying my hands off for now.
    -
Don’t panic if you have INTC, here’s why.
If you already got some INTC on your hand, don’t sell just yet. INTC is kind of overlooked due to how great NVDA and AMD did recently. However, if you do hold INTC, best case scenario INTC gets back on their feet and stomps AMD and NVDA.
    Worst case?
They stay like this for a couple more years. Nothing really bad would happen for a company with such cash in hand. If they use the cash the right way, many things could be achieved.
What do you guys think? Do you still have faith in our good ol’ intel ?

INTC wants to get into the GPU game, so low $44 area support might be an interesting level to watch.

With INTC GPUs around the corner, I dare to say that the bottom is in.

I believe this is their third attempt to be relevant in the GPU space.

I hope Intel is like AMD some years ago (2013, AMD stock price was at 2$ !!!!). AMD had no good strategy. That changed with Lisa Su. The same might happen to Intel. The right CEO and new strategy might change everything for the better at Intel. Intel has SO much great people and technology, I think they can do a lot better. So I bought 100 stocks some weeks ago. Let's see what happens in the next 5-10 years at Intel.

INTC getting into the GPU market is one of those strategies they should have been looking into 8yrs ago. They have a lot of catch up to do.

I am following this one. This might be a good one to buy while its down, and then watch it ride up for several years, or more. If I buy, it will be a long term play for me.

I took a small position in INTC at around $30.

If it goes up, I will hold. I like it long term.

If it goes down, I will buy more. Incrementally.

I think it should bring good returns in the long run, if bought at or less than $30/share.
