NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) (commonly referred to as Nvidia, stylized as NVIDIA, nVIDIA or nvidia) began as an American technology companybased in Santa Clara, California. Nvidia designs graphics processing units (GPUs) for the gaming market, as well as system on a chip units (SOCs) for the mobile computing and automotive market. Nvidia's primary GPU product line, labeled "GeForce", is in direct competition with Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD) "Radeon" products. Nvidia expanded its presence in the gaming industry with its handheld SHIELD Portable, SHIELD Tablet, and SHIELD Android TV.

Since 2014, Nvidia has shifted to become a platform company focused on four markets - Gaming, Professional Visualization, Data Centers and Auto.

In addition to GPU manufacturing, Nvidia provides parallel processing capabilities to researchers and scientists that allow them to efficiently run high-performance applications. They are deployed in supercomputing sites around the world. More recently, Nvidia has moved into the mobile computing market, where it producesTegra mobile processors for smartphones and tablets, as well as vehicle navigation and entertainment systems. In addition to AMD, its competitors include Inteland Qualcomm.

I have highlighted some key points. If some of this comes to pass you might want to put NVDA in your bear playbook

What of NVIDIA’s Licensing Business after Its Intel Deal Expiry?

    NVIDIA’s licensing business
We’ve seen that NVIDIA’s (NVDA) technological innovations will have a positive impact on the company’s fiscal 2017 earnings. Its gaming, professional visualization, data center, and automotive segments will likely report growth.

However, uncertainty looms for the IP (intellectual property) segment, as the royalty payments it receives from Intel (INTC) under a five-year licensing agreement will come to an end in March 2017.

Probability of renewing a licensing deal with Intel
Recently, there was an unconfirmed rumor in Bloomberg that Intel is in talks with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) about a licensing deal similar to the one it has with NVIDIA. Moreover, in the past five years, there have been no Intel products integrated with NVIDIA GPUs (graphics processing units). The license was a settlement for a patent lawsuit NVIDIA filed against Intel.

Many analysts are pessimistic about NVIDIA’s licensing business. They are of the opinion that the company’s licensing segment’s revenue will collapse if the Samsung deal does not go through. However, if NVIDIA opens its recent GPU technology innovations to licensing, there’s a possibility that it may attract companies.

In the next part of the series, we’ll look at the probable risks the company could face in fiscal 2017. The PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 ETF (QQQ) has 7.8% of its holdings invested in semiconductor stocks. It has 0.36% exposure to NVDA and 2.9% exposure to INTC.

    Poor adoption of technology

NVIDIA is building technology on the anticipation of increased demand for graphics processing units due to the increased adoption of VR, deep learning, and autonomous cars. If the market doesn’t grow as anticipated, NVIDIA’s earnings will be negatively affected.

    Competition

In fiscal 2016, NVIDIA reported strong growth as its biggest competitor Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) lost market share due to delays in product launches, which rendered its products outdated. However, AMD is now set to regain its lost share and is launching competing technologies.

However, NVIDIA has more cash to spend on R&D (research and development) compared to AMD, which is struggling for cash.

I'm only just looking at it. @Tiptopptrader mentioned that NVDA could be a bearish play so I simply added to his post. I wouldn't know which way to place this without the chart doing something to stop the momentum.

More than likely the entire market will have to start dropping to stop NVDA from rallying further.

I think you mis-understood me Chris, from the article I said>

"I have highlighted some key points. If some of this comes to pass you might want to put NVDA in your bear playbook"

If it don't come to pass it would be business as usual

Agreed. It's hard to bet against a 52-wk high though, even if it is overbought now. Like @Gil Oren said above, it will probably take a full market drop before we see this one go down and then it should start trading more "normally" and create more of a range it can be traded in.

nVidia is one of the 'ideological' stocks of mine. I like what they do and I want to see them progress further.

Even with some good graphic cards I see a lot on negative on NVDA. They also have a law suit against INTC and if that causes them to lose there existing deal, that would be a big drop in revenue

    Nvidia’s patent trolling flops
A move by Nvidia to find a replacement for a lucrative patenting deal it has with Intel by patent trolling two other big names has backfired.

Since January 2011 Nvidia had a cushy deal with Intel where Chipzilla would pay it $1.5 billion. It was great while it lasted but Intel has almost paid up and Nvidia thought it could get a similar licensing deal from Samsung and Qualcomm.

It unleashed its mighty briefs in September 2014 claiming that Samsung and Qualcomm had breached United States Patent Nos. 6,198,488, 6,992,667, 7,038,685, 7,015,913, 6,697,063, 7,209,140 and 6,690,372.

These patents were allegedly used in now ancient Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, 400, 600 or 800 series of processors, and devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 3 (LTE), Galaxy S4, and Galaxy S III and the Samsung Note Pro LTE, Galaxy Tab 4, and Galaxy Tab 3 tablet. It should have had Nvidia on a nice little earner.

Then something odd happened. Nvidia only mentioned Samsung in the lawsuit and stopped talking about Qualcomm. In September 2015 judge ruled that Samsung and Qualcomm actually didn’t infringe two of the patents.

It seems then that Nvidia went back to the negotiating table. It appears to have got a few minor agreements from Samsung and Qualcomm, but nothing like the sort of money it got from Intel.

The deal was so minor that Nvidia doesn’t want to talk about it. All the company is saying at this time t

I seriously doubt it though. It's already sort of a tradition when companies operating in similar environments sue each other. Aka MSFT and AAPL until recently.

You are correct but I know INTC he has been making a lot of changes to uplift the company as PC sales are down. I give the contract renewal with NVDA as a coin flip but that is not until 2017.

The new 1080 and 1070 kick ass!!!

The 1080 is amazing, and the 1070 is going to be around $300 which is extremely affordable for this kind of performance!

That 1080 is a little out of my budget, but the 1070 is perfect!

Even better, in about a year or so, buy another 1070 and SLI that!
