thx oldie, stock1234! whelp, as if things couldn't get any more crazier, i was just checking out the latest tracking models this afternoon, and just saw that there is even a chance for this storm to make a turn to the south and potentially impact florida. seriously? geez, will ya pick a direction and stick with it already lol. it's still a very fluid situation here with no real concrete direction on where exactly this thing is going to go. probably won't know for sure until either later tonight or early tomorrow morning.
oh and btw @stock1234, i've been meaning to ask you, how are things where you are today? i know hurricane florence is taking up all the attention in the news, but that tropical storm that's about to hit you guys will be dumping another round of heavy rainfall...hoping for all the best for you guys out there! hopefully no storm damage and/or power outages.
Thanks Cy. Not too bad here actually, just some light rain in Honolulu. I am still indoor right now but doesn’t look that windy by looking outside from the windows. I think weather is much worse though in the neighbor Hawaiian islands
hmm, i haven't gotten the chance to see the latest 5pm advisory, but is it possible that we're seeing some storm deterioration/weakening here? looks like it was downgraded to a cat 3 earlier this afternoon, and the latest path had it moving more into SC, and also GA.
Yeah I think I heard that it is a Category 3 hurricane now from the news this morning, kinda a good news I guess
i like how this storm has decided that it wants to go around us and not directly as us as originally thought. sucks for people in the direct path along the coast, but at least it appears the storm has weakened quite considerably since yesterday. we'll take it!
Waiting on the latest 5pm advisory here, but it is definitely looking more and more like this will just be a rain event for us than anything else. Does not mean that we are entirely out of the woods. Could still see some spotty power outages. But, I am starting to think that I'll at least make it through for a good part of tomorrow which would be great. Then, I can take care of whatever needs to be taken care of (if there is any storm damage, etc) on the weekend.
Again good to hear that you will probably avoid the worst impact of the storm Cy Is it a Category 2 hurricane now? I think I heard that it was downgraded or something this morning but I am not sure
latest advisory is out and its looking a bit more promising. storm now downgraded to a weak cat 2. and it looks to be making a more southerly turn. seems like it will cross over SC and then make a sharp turn north to PA. i guess the forecasts earlier this week that had the storm stationary over NC for a few days won't actually come to fruition as originally thought which is really good to hear.
looks like we're not entirely out of the woods here i just had a brief power outage in my area this morning ... albeit its happening w/o the rain winds picking up but nothing too serious as of now ... hoping i can make it all the way through to today's market close with power on at the very least. we'll see.
@StockJock-e not so lucky though ... he texted me saying he's lost power. dang. he's more east of me though so figures. looks like the storm has lost quite the punch though ... no longer a serious wind event, but rain will be problematic around here for sure.
Good to hear. Been following this one closely as I have immediate family in the Myrtle Beach area. Back in the day we used to buy beer, hunker down and ride it out. Today the media hype is scaring everybody out of town.
whelp, we're finally seeing our very first rain drops from florence ... here goes nothing eh, it's gonna be a long weekend around here
Following the news closely here. The strength of the nature is so impressive. Good luck to all involved to this. Z.
^^ good to see ya @Z-OldEurope! whelp, the rain is now finally tapering off some after almost 48-hours of non-stop rainfall. unfortunately, i did experience a rather lengthy power outage in my area...almost 24 hours to be exact. started from last night, and has just recently come back on about an hour or so ago. glad to have it back, although admittedly i wasn't really sure if it was even going to return by tonight. also some bit of unfortunate news here is that i had a tree crash right in my backyard and actually sliced through my fence! (i'll have a pic posted in here once it's dried out...maybe by tomorrow or sometime this week) we got rather lucky that it did not fall on my home. wow. otherwise, except for some floods here and there, happy to report that we made it through this storm for the most part. i got kind of lucky that my power went out over the weekend, instead of during the trading week. tomorrow i'll go out and assess my yard/home and make sure there wasn't any storm damage, etc. i don't believe there was though. anyway, aside from that fallen tree behind my home, we're kinda fortunate that it wasn't actually worse. although, i really feel for people along the coast. (excuse my language here) by they seriously got fucked big time. anyway, will be looking forward to seeing the sun back this week. it was a rather shitty weekend around here to put it best.
That sounded like a bad werekend Cy, but thankfully sounds like you and your family are safe and your home didn’t suffer damage Yeah really feel bad for those who were impacted. The only positive I guess was that the hurricane has really weakened or we would have seen even more serious impacts/damages
yeah, i'm really feeling for those hard hit areas along the coast...they really took the full brunt of this storm man. also - i think a lot of people (and i am unfortunately included in this too) let their guard down when they kept hearing that the storm was getting downgraded as it was making landfall. sure, while this wasn't much of a "wind" event storm, this was however very much a "water" event. i can't stress that enough, but the flooding down here was downright monumental. even for our area here in the queen city, which got close to 10 inches of total rainfall from this storm was pretty epic -- i believe if i'm not mistaken our area broke a new all time record rainfall within a 3-day period. the previous record was around 8 inches back in 1999 during hurricane floyd. also, i think the state of NC generally speaking broke an all-time record for rainfall within a 3-day period as well. anyway, glad to finally have this storm move on outta here. i'll have to check the final stats on this storm -- i still don't think this was quite as bad as last year's hurricane harvey (as far as rainfall goes) that obliterated texas...but this is probably going to be a pretty close 2nd if i had to guess.
i changed up the thread title here to make it a general hurricane discussion thread seeing as there is yet another storm barreling down the gulf coast. new hurricane (mike) expected to make landfall sometime tomorrow. here are the rainfall totals expected by friday. looks like where i'm at (charlotte) may avoid the worst of the storm, but other areas that were hit hard from florence not so lucky. will be keeping track of this one in the days to come. stay safe to anyone who is in the path of this storm!
