My dad's had a Toyota pickup for 20 years, thing's practically indestructible. Seriously, that truck's seen it all. So yeah, I trust their reliability. The market will hold
I've been watching Spanish language content of the INNEngine eREX-700. It is extremely impressive, to say the least. They had a prototype in 2023 and claim Toyota plans to produce it in 2025. I don't seen how that short development cycle is possible so I will believe it when I see it. Still, even if this engine slips to 2026/2027, that would be a very reasonable development cycle for such a radical new design (I know opposed piston has been around for 80 years but it has never been developed for emissions and mass production like this). If their swash-crank can have reasonable longevity, this engine is a world beater. Forget Achates Power. The AP engine is impressive but it's huge, heavy, and complex compared to the eREX. The eREX-700 is 0.7 liter (being a 2 stroke, it's similar to a 1.4l 4 stroke engine) weighs 80 pounds and produces in the range of 150hp, all while being more efficient than a contemporary engine and creating under 10% of the pollutants. When INN first announced their engine, they made wild clams about efficiency. 40~50% gains were being thrown around. Achates Power did the same. If either of these companies can achieve 10% gain, they will save the ICE car industry. The difference being, the AP design will never be in the front of a car. It is a consumer pickup truck and up platform. While trucks desperately need ICE improvements, the eREX has the potential to change the entire driving world. It's way lighter than a 4 stroke engine of similar power. That means it uses less materials. This is so good on so many levels, I really want to believe INNEngine are not charlatans.
Quick summary: If/when China collapses and if Toyota can successfully bring the INNEngine to market, Toyota will dominate auto for most of the rest of my lifetime.
