The dollar value of all shorted Tesla shares is close to hitting $20 billion. No US stock in history has ever been that shorted.

For perspective, Apple, the second-most shorted stock in America, has 13 billion dollars’ worth of its shares shorted. But as you may know, the company is 14 times bigger than Tesla.

The sheer magnitude of short sellers put Tesla at risk of being caught in a short squeeze of historic proportions.

Still, I wouldn’t call this the top yet. Momentum is a powerful force that could last longer than sanity can hold out. Not to mention Tesla might soon be added to the S&P 500, yet another catalyst that could drive the stock even higher.

Shorted means the stock was borrowed from someone who is long and then sold with a promise to replace it in the future.

The selling (negative price influence) has already happened. The buying (positive price influence) will be done at some point in the future.

If the price goes down much, short fills will stabilize it, limiting the down side. If the price goes up, panic short fills to cut losses will drive the price much higher quickly.

8.51% of Tesla shares have been sold short.

Imagine that boomerang when they are forced to fill.

o_O:duh: I like that boomerang post, tomb16. With that said, and my completely bias opinion, and everything i have been reading while being less vocal as of late...

It does seem quite high right now, but its almost impossible not to feel like as high as it is, its still a geyser that is still building pressure.

Talking to the California Tesla investors is like talking to hard red rock. the only thing that will shake them is an earthquake.

 Wxyz lost his privileges to post, for buying above the magical $1k mark, instead of waiting for a dip....i would venture to bet, getting those profits in, were a fair trade.

I saw that article too. Also saw the author advised people to sell above 2k and buy back below it on dips. No thanks. May as well be talking to a hard red rock as to come at me with that advice.

Market cap is spurred by Elon's post about having commercially produced 400Wh/kg batteries in 3 to 4 years.

Short interest is down a smidgeon at 8.31%.

One month away from battery day, I think the most likely outcome is that Tesla battery day pushes the market cap higher which will trigger a short squeeze and shazam... a market cap that is in the stratosphere elevates into outer space.

With so many moving parts and distractions, I don't think many people understand the state of Tesla.

    - I put production capacity for Q3 2020 around 175K units for the quarter. The next quarter report will surprise many people.

    - The energy storage business is currently in very rapid expansion. Storage shipped in 2020 will probably be around 3GW but they massively increased capacity at mid year so forward looking annual energy storage capacity is probably 4.5 or 5 GW.

    - They have done an amazing job of controlling information about FSD development. That makes this FSD prediction a guess. I speculate there will be a major release about a week before the annual meeting and battery day on September 22. It seems unlikely that release will be an FSD alpha but I speculate it will be extremely close. The next release should make it such that it won't take much imagination to see a path from current AutoPilot to FSD.

With enterprise value of $400B, Tesla is really a software company. If they never achieve FSD, it will be extremely difficult for them to grow into the valuation. They would have to produce 10M cars per year at high margin to be worth the current market price. If they achieve FSD, the current valuation will be way too low.

Let's talk silicon anode. Why is it important?

What if Tesla invents a battery that had double the energy density, double the longevity, and at double the price? Why not just continue to produce graphene based anodes?

    Two things.

    1) If Tesla can double their energy density, they may have an opportunity to use half the cells per vehicle without a reduction in range. This will effectively free up half of their production capacity for production expansion.

    2) The reduced weight of higher storage density will positively impact the entire Tesla catalog but it will have the biggest positive effect on the compact model that is currently in planning. In fact, I suspect the compact model is being delayed for this development.

VW ID.3 is 3600# without a driver. What if Tesla can produce a small hatch that is under 3 kilopounds? A 20% weight advantage would be huge in terms of efficiency, cost, and performance.

Another ATH at $2295 today. Kicking myself for selling my weekly $2000C yesterday as it is worth $249 now.

There are techniques to mitigate the swelling. It sounds like Tesla is not going down that path but others are. I expect they will increase silicone content over time but perhaps they have another technique...

    The goal is multi-ion reactions.

How many batteries have promised to change the world, over the years? It's a high number.

The batteries that are changing the world are a handful of lithium ion variants.

Evolution has quietly brought us to a much better place while we were distracted with unanimously unfulfilled promises of revolution.

    Further anode discussion....

The swelling problem Elon mentioned is a mechanical problem that can be mitigated by using larger anodes. This would suggest either really large cylindrical, pouch, or prismatic cells.

Tesla advertised for pouch cell engineers last year, suggesting they are working on them, but I would guess they are really working on prismatic cells.

Apparently, Tesla have preferred cylindrical cells for QC purposes. They can balance a pack far more accurately with cylindrical cells than with pouch/prismatic. The surprising aspect of this is that they are going to significant lengths to balance packs.

I'm not sure of the significance of anode free cells as is coming through the Tesla media outlets currently but I doubt this will be shown on September 22. Tesla applied for a patent for this idea on July 9. It doesn't seem reasonable they would be showing a production ready version of the cell on September 22 and it doesn't seem likely they would share early stages of research.

I'd like to see what has come of the Hi Bar work. Perhaps we will see how the Maxwell acquisition will integrate into the battery strategy.

They have been working with pouch cells for two years and yet there has been no product or announced product that uses this battery format. Perhaps we will learn something of this? The Maxwell anode is said to be suitable for pouch or prismatic cells. I suspect Tesla's job postings for pouch cell engineers and researchers were actually for prismatic cells but who knows.
