METALS-Copper up on robust China data and falling inventories

    ReutersMonday November 08, 2021 6:19 AM

(Recasts, updates prices) By Pratima Desai LONDON, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Copper prices rose on Monday as strong export growth data from top consumer China, falling inventories and the passing of a $1 trillion U.S. infrastructure bill boosted sentiment, though gains were capped by concern over Chinese demand. Benchmark copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) was up 1.2% at $9,637 a tonne at 1658 GMT. The price of copper, which is used in the power and construction industries, has traded in a narrow $300 range over the past week as the market awaits more definitive information about future demand prospects. "Industrial metals are still faced with headwinds amid signs of an easing energy crisis and demand destruction that added pressure on the economic outlook from the largest consumer (China) and elsewhere in the world," said ING analyst Wenyu Yao. "As a result, the outcomes from China's Politburo meeting this week will be closely scrutinised for clues on demand-side prospects for metals." EXPORTS: China's export growth beat forecasts, helped by booming global demand ahead of the winter holiday season, an easing power crunch and improvement in supply chains that have been badly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. COPPER: Stocks in LME-registered warehouses have more than halved since late August to 115,525 tonnes. Cancelled warrants - metal earmarked for delivery - at 62% suggests overall stocks are set to fall further. Concerns about copper availability on the LME market have created a premium for cash copper over the three-month contract . USA: President Joe Biden on Saturday hailed congressional passage of a long-delayed $1 trillion infrastructure bill, which supported sentiment in industrial metals markets. TECHNICALS: Copper has yet to break decisively below a congestion area between $9,450 and $9,490, which houses the 50-day moving average, the 100-day moving average and a Fibonacci retracement level. Further strong support comes in at $9,350, where the 200-day moving average currently sits. OTHER METALS: Aluminium rose 2.1% to $2,609 a tonne, zinc added 1.4% to $3,273, lead rose 0.2% to $2,357, tin was up 0.9% at $37,400 and nickel gained 1.1% to $19,640. 2021-11-12 11:02 ET - News Release

HIGH COURT OF NAMIBIA ORDERS THE MINISTRY OF MINES TO FILE FURTHER DOCUMENTS WITH THE COURT NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 18, 2021

At the court hearing on Nov. 11, 2021, the legal counsel of the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Namibia requested an additional week to complete its filing of the documents supporting the decision of the Minister to refuse the copper licence renewal for Haib Minerals, Deep-South Resources Inc.'s fully owned subsidiary. The High Court of Namibia granted the Ministry the requested time to complete the filing. Deep-South's legal counsel will have ten court days to review the documents of the Ministry and decide if the Applicant Haib Minerals will supplement its affidavit and supporting documents. Furthermore, Haib Minerals legal counsel in a status report also requested the court to issue an Order to facilitate a fair and expeditious determination of the Haib Minerals original application to review the decision of the Minister.

The Court will hold another hearing on November 25, 2021, to define the further procedures with regards to the review of the decision of the Minister.

The Company will provide regular updates in this regard and any other matter concerning this situation.

    Corporate update

While recuperating Haib Copper mineral rights remains a top priority, Management continues to seek another copper project.

Some projects have been identified and discussions with their owners are taking place.

The Company will provide an update on the matter in due course. The Management is determined to develop Deep-South as a developer of important copper projects.

Notes on the Court application to review the decision of the Minister to not renew the Haib Copper licence

As disclosed in our press release dated June 16, 2021, the Company had received notice from the Ministry informing the Company that its application for the renewal of its EPL had been denied citing the Company's inability to advance the EPL to Pre-Feasibility and complete the proposed drilling program as planned. The Company maintains that the Ministry was kept well apprised, with no objection on their part, of a proposed change from the Pre-Feasibility study to an upgraded Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) and commencement of a full feasibility study. The latter was already started at the time of the refusal. Moreover, the Ministry issued all permits required for the drilling program and are well aware that Deep-South has completed the drilling program.

World copper demand to grow on economic recovery and global energy transition - report

    Vladimir BasovThursday November 18, 2021 16:51

(Kitco News) - Copper is entering a stronger demand phase, supported in the immediate term by economic recovery and a pickup in industrial production, and in the longer term by the global energy transition, which is boosting demand for copper in renewable energy technology and battery storage.

This was reported by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER).

“Emerging technologies, such as electric vehicles and portable consumer devices, are also likely to play a role in building copper demand over time. Infrastructure spending in a range of countries (most notably the US) presents a further potential upside to copper demand over the outlook period, though the scale of this is not yet clear,” DISER said in its report.

Refined copper consumption is expected to increase by 4.4% in 2021, to reach 26 million tonnes, DISER added, with activity expected to follow broader trends in industrial production. Total world consumption is forecast to reach 27 million tonnes in 2023, increasing by 5% over the two years of the outlook period.

According to the report, China accounted for more than half (54%) of global refined copper consumption in 2020, in addition to being the largest refiner of copper (42%).

“This position at the heart of the global copper market makes China highly influential with regard to global copper prices and investment decisions,” the authors of the report noted.

Chinese copper consumption peaked in the September quarter 2020 and subsequently declined for two quarters, but is now recovering again at a moderate pace, DISER said.

Copper prices, which have surged in 2021, are expected to retain most of this gain in the years ahead, with demand supported by economic recovery and the expanding use of copper in low-emissions technology.
