The decision to expand vanadium production comes amid soaring prices for the material: Pricing for both ferro-vanadium and vanadium pentoxide have more than quadrupled over the past 15 months due to global supply constraints and a consistent strengthening in demand. Fastmarkets assessed the ferro-vanadium price in the United States at $51-53 per lb on October 11, up from $11.65-12 per lb in early July 2017 Vanadium pentoxide was assessed at $23.60-25 per lb on October 12, up from $5.35-6 per lb in the same comparison. The company, a subsidiary of Amsterdam-based AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group NV, expects to commence production on the new facility in mid-2019, with spent catalyst processing capacity rising by 35,000 tons and that for vanadium production by 6 million lbs. AMG is targeting early 2021 for completion of construction on the new processing facility, which replaces a previously announced 30% expansion of its existing facility in Cambridge, Ohio. "The new facility will help AMG meet customer demand for management of spent catalysts, a listed hazardous waste, and provide proven sustainable recycling of the valuable metals contained in the waste,” AMG Vanadium president Hoy Frakes said in a statement on Tuesday October 16. AMG's management board approved the commencement of engineering work on the new facility after completing a feasibility study to replicate the existing plant in Cambridge. “This expansion has been in the making for over a year and would not be possible without the AMG teams' depth of experience, local and state governmental and agency support, and our stakeholders' commitment to the industry," Frakes said. The analysts refer to how share prices have performed, saying that it is the first time in many years that they seen this big disconnect between the stock prices and the demand forecast. They have not seen any data showing that the demand is reversing or slowing down, if anything, it seems the demand narrative is only getting stronger they said. When looking back at 2018, the experts believe this year will be seen as the year where valuations reset because “there are some enormously cheap opportunities in the lithium space right now.”
